This week has been a little less progressive than last week. I did not move that much toward my goal. While there were a few nights that my phone was off by 11:15, there were others where I was connected past 11:30. My brother and his wife have been expecting a baby (their son was born on July 12th), so we had been awake and waiting for any news for a few nights this week. Now that the baby has arrived, I do expect to be in bed sooner next week. Also, I have dance camp next week which requires a wake-up time of 6 am, so I will need to go to bed earlier.
Towards the beginning of the week my mom was a helpful referee. She reminded me a couple times to get into bed so that I can put my phone away sooner. As I said, my brother and his wife just had a baby. Therefore, my mom has been very preoccupied since my sister-in-law went to the hospital. I don’t blame her for not being much of a referee lately. I do expect it to get better once I am home towards the end of next week, and after she has spent some time with the baby.
I feel okay about my progress this week. I did very well towards the beginning. An unusual event (the birth of my nephew) was the cause of my failure later in the week. Since the baby has been born now, it will be less of a distraction keeping me up at night. Also, next week at dance camp will help me achieve my goal. I expect to have my phone put away every night next week (and likely be asleep) by 11 pm in anticipation of the early mornings.
I will not be the one responsible for changing my plans for next week, as this dance camp schedule is out of my control. However, I do appreciate the early start because it will push me to go to bed earlier. I will be in a different environment, so I will not have my mom available to referee me Monday through Wednesday nights. I don’t think this will affect my ability to reach my goal, however. I do believe that next week I can reach my goal of having my phone put away by 11 pm each night.

I am making much better progress towards my goal this week. I have succeeded in putting my phone down by 11:30 pm each night. Compared to last week, when I only accomplished this a few nights of the week, I am moving in the right direction.
There were a few nights this week that my mom did come by my room to remind me to put my phone away. When she did, I picked up my book if I still had my light on. If I had already turned my light off, I just put my phone away and tried to fall asleep.
The book has not been a big factor in this success, so far. I think it is because I need my lamp on to read, so I can not fall asleep while reading. If my light is already on when I pick up my book, it works in helping me put my phone down. However, if my light has already been turned off, it would be more of a distraction to turn it back on to read.
I am starting to feel a little more well rested. I’ve even stayed at work later than usual a couple of days this week, because I didn’t feel the need to get home to take a nap. I am excited to see how rested I feel once I reach my goal of putting my phone away by 11 pm or earlier each night.
With our county fair being this coming week, I will really need to be conscious of what time I am leaving so that I have enough time to get home and relax before bed, so I am not awake enough to want to stay on my phone. I think that I will be okay with doing that, though.
My next step is to push for my 5-week goal of being off my phone by 11 pm. I might even be able to go a little earlier than that before this class is over. I don’t think I need to change much going forward. I will continue to try to get into bed earlier, which will help me wind down and put my phone away earlier.

This week, I did not make much progress towards my goal. The main step towards this goal that I made was thinking about putting my phone down while laying in bed. I would think about this goal that I have, but then I wouldn’t feel a strong desire to put down my phone. I have been trying to get in bed earlier in the hopes that I would be on my phone enough before bed to put it away at a reasonable time. There were a few nights that I had my phone down by 11:30, but it was not every night. I think that if I could get every night down to the same time around 11:30, I could start to push that time earlier.
My referee (mom) has not been much help. She has been going to bed sooner than I have, so she hasn’t been able to see that I am on my phone so late. Hopefully I can get to bed earlier so that she has a chance to remind me to put my phone down. It is definitely not her responsibility, but I feel that if I have that added pressure, it might push me to follow through.
I am not too upset by this amount of progress, because I knew that it would be hard for me. I am, however, somewhat surprised. I thought that my issue would be with remembering to put my phone away, but that has not been the problem. My main problem is lack of motivation to put my phone away.
I think the reason I am not succeeding is because I have a certain order of things I look through on my phone before bed. I will need to cut some of them out so that I can feel satisfied with my before bed phone usage.
As I am writing this progress report, I have thought of an idea to help me put my phone away without feeling like I have to lay down and go to bed right away. To assist me in my goal, I will have a book by my bed to read prior to falling asleep. This will be a good way to “wind down” and hopefully it will help me to put my phone away earlier and earlier. I do like to read, so I can see this plan working out for me.

My goal is to cut down on social media usage, specifically by being off of my phone by 11 pm each night. Since it is my job to promote my company through social media, I can not avoid it during the day; however, I can stop myself from “logging in” every night before I fall asleep. I would say I usually stay on my phone until about 12 or 12:30 am. This affects my sleep, as I am usually in bed by 10:30 or 11 pm.
This goal is important to me for a few reasons. For one, my eyes have started to become strained from looking at screens all day long. Since I started working a desk job, I have been looking at screens almost the whole day. Another is that this strain is causing headaches for me. I need to take a break from looking at screens, but it is hard to get that time to take a break during work. Also, I want to get better sleep at night, and the blue light from a phone screen can hinder that sleep. If I fell asleep soon after getting in bed, I would get one or two extra hours of sleep at night, which is a great reason to set this goal.
My plan for attaining this goal is to start out by trying to be off my phone by 11:30 pm. I will put my phone on my desk where I can not reach it from my bed. I will likely have to silence all notifications, so I am not tempted to check my phone. After I have succeeded with the social media shutdown at 11:30, I will push it up to my goal of 11 pm. Hopefully I will be able to take this even farther as I grow into the habit of falling asleep without checking social media. The end goal would be to not use my phone after 10:30 pm, but I am not sure that is an attainable goal in only five weeks, which is why I set this goal for 11 pm. I am hoping that since I live with my referee (my mother), she will hold me to this, making sure that my phone is on my desk before she goes to bed.
