Week 5 - I've continued to make progress over the course of this past week (01/28 - 02/03). My nails are looking fantastic! Although Week 5 was a very hectic week for me and I didn't have time to sit still for long*, give yourself credit for demonstrating discipline at crucial times during this time period. There were several times that I stopped myself from biting when I began to think about how I was going to move certain things out of my former apartment. Although I was stressed out, by reciting my mantra I was able to release my habit on several occasions. Keep up the good work!
Be prepared to face several new tests over the course of this coming week (02/04 - 02/10). I must train myself to stop biting my nails when I READ; I plan to start reading on a daily basis starting this week. I GUARANTEE YOU THAT IF YOU'RE ABLE TO TRAIN YOURSELF TO *REFRAIN* FROM BITING WHEN YOU READ, YOU WILL WIN THIS BATTLE. YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO RELEASE THIS NAIL-BITING HABIT ALL TOGETHER!
Recite this new mantra when you catch yourself biting while you read: "I need to educate myself in order to become a better version of myself. Reading in a focused and consistent manner will allow me to reach my next level and create change in my life. Biting my nails greatly hinders my ability to focus when I read. You can't afford to engage in this horrible habit whiling reading!"

Week 4 - Boy, I'm late to this party. Although I failed to file a report last week (01/21 - 01/27), I did an even better job of abstaining from biting than I did during Week 3. Something wonderful is happening. I've trained myself to recite my nail-biting mantra when I catch myself beginning to bite my nails! After reciting this mantra, and acknowledging its very powerful message, I've been able to muster up enough self-control to refrain from biting.
It is a shame that I've lost out on the $25.00USD that I had on the line for this week. Learn a lesson here. You can't discount how important it is to file reports on Stickk. Keeping track of your progress is just as important as continuing to make progress. As Ed Mylett says: "When performance is measured, performance improves." I will make sure I don't miss out on filing another report going forward. |

Week 3 - I did a much better job this week! I picked my nails less than ten times! My goal for next week is to employ my new nail-biting mantra on a more regular basis. I will also make an effort to employ Mel Robbins' "5-Second Rule" in order to abruptly check myself when I become aware that I'm biting.
I think it's fair to attribute my success this week to a couple of things. For one, I was far more active and productive. I got a lot of things done and used my free time more productively. There's no doubt that my nail biting habit exists because I've always struggled with feelings of anxiety from time to time; I bite my nails to distract myself when I'm feeling stressed. By being productive and getting things done this week, feelings of stress were mitigated and I bit my nails less often.
Secondly, I did not want to lose out on another $25.00 this week! I've never *put myself* in a position where I could lose money if I failed to stop engaging in a bad habit. When I caught myself biting over the course of this past week I reminded myself that I would lose another $25.00 if I didn't change my ways. This whole experiment is proving to be very helpful. |

Week 2 - If I'm going to stop biting my nails, I have to be as honest as possible with myself when it comes to filling out these reports.
I did not make progress over the course of last week (01/07 - 01/13). I did not abstain from picking my nails on a regular basis; I gave in to temptation countless times. I did not even do a good job of recording how many times I picked my nails for an extended period of time*. It's fair to say I picked my nails between 15-25 times over the course of this week. To demonstrate how serious I am about my commitment I'm going to have to give away the $25.00USD that I had on the line for this week.
* I'm making this up as I go. What qualifies as an instance of "nail biting?" An instance of nail biting has occurred if you bite your nails more than five times over the course of a five minute interval. Let's try something new going forward. Once you catch yourself biting your nails, **stop everything you're doing** and pull your phone out. Set a timer for five minutes and let it count down. During this period of time I want you to close your eyes and repeat these words: "I need to stop biting my nails if I want to achieve success in this life. Biting my nails hinders my ability to focus and perform. I want my nails to look beautiful. I can become a more confident, vibrant person if I stop biting my nails. If don't break this habit right now, I never will!!" |
