Week 7 Graduation mindset
Compared to other strategies I think the graduation mindset needs more work because factors affecting the mindset go beyond poverty. Students have different views of life but we as teachers have the mandate to ensure they achieve in life and academics. I believe the mindset requires input from the parents and teachers. I always tell my students that they will excel in life and not just academics and no student will ever fail in my class. Talking about not allowing any of my students to fail motivates them and works towards excelling to secure a chance in college. I also encourage them to be prepared for college life and most of them seem excited about it.
Three New Insights
1. A teacher should help his ore her students achieve
2. Students need to know the value of achievement
3. Teachers need to collaborate with parents and other staff members to ensure a student achieves
Strategy to implement
“Prepare for college and careers” is a strategy I would like to implement as it can be embraced by other staff members. The whole mindset requires a collaboration of different parties. In this situation, I will increase their exposure by giving them an overview of what different colleges offer (showing them videos and pictures) and also ask them what they would like to do in college. I can also invite staff from one of the colleges I find feasible to reach. The individual can be a staff or one of the students in the college. He or she will elaborate on what it is like to be in college and even tell them some of the privileges they will get when in college. The exposure will be also on various jobs in the country. I believe presenting such kind of exposure would motivate them to graduate and be someone in life.

I have always managed to have a personal connection with my students. An engagement mindset is the best way to ensure a student feels part of a class |

Week 6- Engagement mindset
The self-assessment form gives a broad meaning of engagement in a classroom. I believe that without a personal connection with students, the learning process will not accommodate everyone. For a teacher to develop an engagement mindset, he or she should have a solid teacher-student relationship. To keep students interested in learning, I do shift from the academic content to normal issues affecting us today, I ask them questions regarding technology and even politics, I make them be the subject of discussion and they tell me about themselves. I find it effective as my students are never bored. I can also easily notice when a student is stressed because I already know them and sometimes you find a student is worried about things like lacking money for an upcoming trip. Is sit with them and find an amicable solution.
Three New Insights
1. High student engagement leads to success
2. Students need an active class for effective learning
3. Learning should inspire students
Strategy to implement
“Engage to build community” is a strategy I would like to explore. However, I have used some of its aspects like solving common problems whereby I had some class routines. Reciprocal teaching is one I want to try next and see how it will work. Though as I have read, its aspects are implementable, for instance, “clarifying the content”. Therefore, after every lesson I will ask students what they have learned, I will also explain to them whatever they have not understood. I will use examples that can be related to the contemporary world and they will be able to get a clearer picture of the issue. Summarily, the whole idea of the engagement mindset will work when a teacher has built a strong teacher-student relationship.
