10/5/2014 Today I completed the 5th day of studying 6 hours for Phd and with that my commitment for the week. I spent comparatively lesser time reading and more time thinking. That proved fruitful, as I learnt a lot of things by thinking, and more importantly, a lot of new avenues for thought were opened up to me. Reading, thinking, simplifying, making frameworks, again reading again thinking, that is the way to learn.

7/5/2014 Completed my fourth day of studying 6 hours per day for Phd. Did four hours of studying yesterday and two hours of thinking today. Ran into possible problems of motivation, meaning that now that I know how to deconstruct, select and learn, I just need to show up and I would learn long term. The uncertainty about learning is gone and I know how to learn long term. So effectively there is no challenge, I just need to show up and I would learn. I also found the answer to this quandary. The answer is that one constantly needs to tackle tougher and tougher challenges. What I have learnt or will learn by reading books is just the beginning. One needs to add ones own thoughts to it. As has been said in the book, there are two ways of financial statement analysis. One is mechanically calculating ratios, ticking off boxes from the checklist. This provides little challenge and may not be effective as well. The second is to dig deep, asking ones own questions, starting when the questions of the checklist are over, trying to uncover what management wants to conceal. Similarly learning a method is just the first step, one needs to ask ones own questions and generate ones own answers using the method. If one does that, there is no paucity of challenges.

5/5/2014 Today was my third consecutive day of studying 6 hours. I started early in the day, so was able to wind up by 3:30 in the afternoon. Feel no stress. Did the deconstruction of credit analysis and find that it sure helps. Now I need to select and sequence, and make mnemonics. A reason why deconstruction is so beneficial is because, in a large complicated chapter, by deconstruction, one can identify the basic structure of the chapter, and then things are not so tough. Once the structure is made, the details automatically hang from the structure. But still mnemonics are needed to remember the structure and the details. I now have the whole afternoon and evening to enjoy myself

4/5/2014 Today was my second day of studying 6 hours a day for PhD. I started early today and now, at 5:30, I have finished. This gives me the entire evening to enjoy without feeling any guilt. Right now, I feel fresh and not strained or exhausted as I felt in the first day. It seems that one can get used to this schedule with time and make 6 hours of studying a matter of habit. Over the course of six hours today and yesterday, I have absorbed a huge amount of information. Now what remains is to retain it. I guess Tim Ferriss's method as well as mnemonics would help me remember the material. Anyway, I have the whole evening to think about the method. As I said yesterday, keeping the journal and using stickk seems to help because I cannot wait to post on it and actually writing my experiences in the commitment journal at the end of a hard day is very satisfying.
