My progress this week has been very positive. I have continued my daily walking routine, and I am on my sixth day of walking this week. I am seeing not only the mental health benefits, but I am starting to see the physical benefits. I have lost 4 pounds, and though that may not seem like much, I can feel it in my clothes. My clothes fit better, which makes me feel better about myself.
Walking in the morning when it’s cooler is a great way to start my day. I find myself doing my morning talks out loud with my dog and having a more positive outlook on the day. The last few months have been tough, and I feel like I’m turning the corner to a better outlook on life and a more positive thought process.
Having self-confidence is something I have struggled with my whole life, and I lost it for a while. Doing these daily walks and sticking to a commitment has made me feel more confident. Having the benefit of losing weight is a bonus, but this walking commitment is more for my mental health. This assignment has been good for me and something I will use with my degree in Psychology as a good practice and teaching cognitive therapy, of doing things to make yourself more confident, change negative thoughts into positive ones and setting yourself up with a schedule weekly.

I am updating on week two of the commitment to exercise 5 days a week for this progress report. This has been a good experience for me and has kept me on track when I would have usually found an excuse not to go. I am good at finding excuses not to have to do it, and this helps me work through that.
It has been a very hot week with the weather, so one of the things I chose to do was go for a walk early in the morning and then again in the evening. Usually, I take my dog for a walk and stay in the car so he can run alongside me, but now I park and walk with him twice a day. This has made him happy and has given me a chance to do some meditation and enjoy nature, which in turn has helped me with my anxiety.
I am pleased that I have done it every day, and even this morning on Saturday. Committing to walking with my dog instead of staying in the car has been a good way to motivate me. I feel good when I am done, and it boosts my mood and makes me feel good about myself. I have also added a quick walk right before bedtime, down the street and back with my dog, which isn’t a lot, but it does get in some extra steps.
The most significant benefit for me so far has been the mental health aspect of it. I know that physically, it is doing good for my body, but I have been struggling with anxiety for several years now, since the death of my husband. This walking time also gives me a chance to walk by his grave and talk to him, and do some spiritual work by praying when I walk, and sometimes, I will sing. My referee has accompanied me on several of the walks and is supportive, which is helping her as well. I did something like this in my nutrition class, but I am enjoying focusing on how this is helping the anxiety I have been experiencing. I will continue this process again next week and look forward to updating the results.

Progress Report #1

For this progress report, I’ve committed to exercising five days a week. At 55 years old, I’ve started noticing some shifts in my health, and I know it’s time to take better care of my body and overall well-being. My goal isn’t just about fitness—it’s about becoming a healthier, more balanced version of myself.

There are three main reasons I chose this commitment. First, I want to feel better physically. As I get older, I’ve realized how important it is to keep moving so my body doesn’t become stiff or achy. Movement really is medicine. Second, I need this for my mental health. After losing my husband to cancer, I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety. Walking outside helps ease the anxiety, grounds me in the present moment, and lets my mind rest. Lastly, this commitment supports my spiritual health. When I walk, it gives me time to reflect, listen to spiritual music, pray, or just be quiet and connected with nature. That’s healing in itself.

I’ve promised myself to walk at least one mile a day, five days a week. I prefer to walk the back roads, away from busy streets and people. There, I feel more relaxed and at peace. This small habit is a step toward bringing balance into my life—physically, mentally, and spiritually. I plan to do this walk every morning, right after I have my coffee, Monday through Friday. If I can fit in Saturday or Sunday too, that’s a bonus.

Lately, things have been heavy, and I believe this routine will help me feel more grounded. I know it won’t fix everything, but it’s a start. I also think this will help with school stress and give me a chance to reset each day. I’m ready for this challenge and hopeful that it will help me move forward in a really positive way.
