I have reviewed the Bear Hunter System in Ascent stages and done some mindmapping with it. This made me realize the true value of inquiry based learning as well as the questions "how important" and "how related?"
you need to ask a question that connects the shit to prior knowledge, or that indicates the knowledge is useful for your survival and thus worth remembering. "What" questions are by nature isolated. They just describe the concept in isolation. "How related" and "why relevant?" automatically encodes the shit harder while implicitely answering the "what?" question anyway.
"What" questions are a trap!
At the same time it's very easy to fall into naive "what" questions when trying to learn a new thing because it can be relatively hard to just understand it implicitly by relating it to what you already know, when it's a complex subject you are just learning. An instructor can provide metaphors and comparisons more easily than a student that is JUST learning it. Trying to answer "what" by answering "how important and related to what?" requires more cognitive overload when starting from complete ignorance where you have no idea what truly this could be related to, but it does lead to better encoding! Plus with LLMs nowadays, this inquiry based approach can be greatly improved.
