This was a good week. This week has come with a lot of listening, mainly due to the fact that I put myself in a position where everyone around me is really worried about me, and as annoying as it is to hear about my wrongs, I am grateful for the people in my life who show genuine concern, and as much as I don't always appreciate people talking about me I know they have my best interest at heart. I think the most important lesson, that people have been constantly telling me, that I've begun to internalize this week. Is to not give a f#%* what people think about me. Here's the thing I'm a human therefore I am eligible to die at any moment, and therefore I have no obligation to satisfy anyone else's expectation of me. So, Willy if you're reading this, I'm sorry that I'm not sorry for posting pictures of my abs on Instagram. I grew up morbidly obese, and I do have a deep appreciation for the amount of growth I've achieved, even if I'm not where I want to be quite yet. It's my "story" so to speak, and I'll tell it how I want. On top of that a great man once told me I inspire a lot of people, but I digress. Another thing I did this week, that was recommended to me by someone who I consider an older brother, was therapy. The truth is in so many ways I am a broken man at the ripe age of 21. I've been betrayed, heartbroken, and traumatized my entire life, and yes some of that is my own fault ,and I take full responsibility for it. So I took it upon myself to go to therapy, and begin to do the deep foundational work, that will hopefully help me to begin to heal from my ailments. It was hard, and to be honest I was already tearing up by the time I got to the check in. By the end however, I felt a lot better. It went exactly how you would imagine any good therapy session would go. I talked and they listened. When I felt unsure they asked me the right questions that helped me come to the right conclusions, and when I just needed someone to tell me the truth they did that too.
I'll end on this note. This week, for the first time ever I sat down, and was able to have a conversation with one of my coaches who I've always butted heads with. The thing is I don't like being talked down to, at all, and I struggle a lot with differentiating genuine constructive criticism (which can sometimes sound harsh), and the former. I think it's an ego thing, and the funny thing is there's a lot of times when people are really talking down to me, and I'll just take it, which is very unhealthy. I think what I need to work on there is just knowing when and where to exercise my backbone, and when to shut up and listen to the people who have my best interest at heart.
P.S. By exercising my backbone I don't necessarily mean getting into a confrontation every time I have an issue with the way someone is speaking to me. I just need to be confident not cocky, and for the first time in my life I think I'm beginning to see the difference. |

To be honest I've seen a lot of growth in my life lately whether it be in work, school, or life in general everything is actually great and the more I listen the more I realize that. I still have a LOT of work to do however. I won't go into too much detail, but I made a not so wise decisions on Americas 250th. We're all human, and we all make mistakes, so I'm trying not to dwell on the matter, but I do recognize it for what it was, which is a mistake. All I can think to do from now is what I've always been told to do in life and in boxing. Reset, Restart, Refocus. I want to be a better person, and there is no such thing as perfect, but I think if I try real hard I can get close. As far as this week goes I'm gonna go ahead and call it an unsuccessful period, but I think if I listen to what people have been telling me I can probably do better next week. |

So for starters, the first thing I started listening to was my mind and body. I have a tendency to ignore things that are bothering me until they become an overwhelming issue, and long story short I have been ignoring my mental, physical, and spiritual health for quite some time now. I guess it's because I think of breaks as being lazy, but the truth is everyone needs a vacation every now and again. I told Willy on Monday that I wasn't going to be training this week, and strictly coaching at the gym. When i did that I committed to listening to what my students were saying, as well as seeing the specific areas of improvement that they needed help with. Overall I'm glad I took a week off from training because it allowed me to step back from the mindset of a fighter, and into the coaching mindset. I was able to see exactly what willy was talking about on at least two separate occasions. Once I was explaining something to a student, and they kept talking over me so I stood there and stared at him until he listened. Another time was just yesterday, when a I was explaining to one of my students how to throw a hook, and he said, "I know, I know, I know", and I am not making this up when I tell you that Willy and I had that exact same interaction last week. There's been a lot of other happenings in my life as of late, and I honestly think for the first time in my life I have found some semblance of peace. I won't say that this week has been the best decision making week of my life either, I am on vacation after all, but I will say is that I have done a lot better of a job of thinking with logic, as opposed to reacting off of my emotions. |
