Strategic Futuring Worksheet
Overview of the assignment:
Our lives are a story, one only we can tell.
Our story begins at birth – we live our story one day at a time.
Along the way we are presented with challenges, opportunities, threats, and choices in every stage of the life cycle.
By looking at our past and assessing our present we can begin to identify a future which we can choose, if so desired.
One of the best kept secrets is that we can influence our future to the extent that we envision our future and treat that vision as fact.
God drops a sense of our future into our hearts and births a sense of calling within all of us as we journey through the story that is our life.
God has given each of us the ability to look back, be present, and envision the future. However, we all have a propensity to think more readily in one of those dimensions. Therefore, the following envisioning exercise may be more challenging to some than others.
Try not to get hung up on thoughts like “this future I imagined will never happen,” “I’m not good at this,” and “I’m too busy trying to get by in the present to imagine the future.” This is intended to be an enjoyable exercise that builds a foundation for hope. Allow yourself to enjoy the experience, use your God-given imagination, and build a positive future.
You need about 45 - 60 minutes of uninterrupted time. This is not a worksheet that you can start one day and finish on another. You need to do the entire worksheet in one sitting.

Find a quiet spot and allow yourself to imagine the year fifteen years from today. Determine how old you will be. The following worksheet asks you to put yourself into a day Fifteen years from now. Don’t try to imagine a certain future. Just be aware of whatever comes to mind. Don’t judge it. Simple let it be what it is and write it down. During the exercise, your mind might drift back to the present. That’s OK. As soon as you are aware of that drift, refocus on that specific year. If you find yourself frustrated that nothing is immediately coming to mind, just relax and write what is on your mind. Everyone is different. Some have clear visions, others have a general sense. This exercise is not about conjuring up a vision. It is simply about giving yourself time to listen to your life and what God has placed in your heart.
1. Imagine you are waking up fifteen years from now. Write down the year.
Where are you? Who is with you? What do the surroundings look like?
The year is 2028 and I will be 60 years old. I will be in my mountain house still working, but working at home. I will have my soul mate with me and I will be sitting on my back deck overlooking the Triad of North Carolina.
2. Preparation for the day.
What is your routine? How are you dressed? How are your surroundings organized?
My morning starts with coffee on the deck with a newspaper only in my shorts. Everything will be in it’s place.
3. Morning Activities
What are you doing? Where are you? With whom are you doing these things?
My day will start working from home and on the computer estimating projects. I will be working with my co-workers in Greensboro, NC.
4. Lunch
Where are you having lunch? With whom are you eating? What takes place?
My lunch will be light and will be eating with my wife. A simple sandwich with chips.

5. Afternoon Activities
What are you doing? Where are you? With whom are you doing these things?
I will be on an afternoon bike ride along the roads on the parkway again with my wife.

6. Evening
What are you doing? Where are you? With whom are you doing these things?
Having dinner with my wife at my house in the mountains.

7. Going to Sleep
You are reflecting on your day, what is your state of mind? What gave your life meaning that day?
My day will end thanking God for another day on earth and spending time with family.

15 years in the Future: Visionary Milestones

From the perspective of your fifteen years in the future reality, look back in increments of five years and describe what events took place and/what decisions were made that contributed..

10 years from now
I will be working on my retirement looking forward to purchase my dream home in the mountains of North Carolina.

5 years from now
After receiving my degree in business I plan to take charge of the office I work with now. We have 2 other locations in Georgia and I will be in complete charge of the NC office.

This year
I plan to work hard on my degree once I get back on my feet and into school. I am having a hard time with the change in career and life. I let women control me and now it’s time for me to take control.
Strategic Goal Candidates

In order to choose your vision, what three to five things do you need to focus on doing/developing over the next two to three years?

3. Concentrate on school and earning my degree

4. Keep working on my retirement and focus on getting my girls through school along with myself

5. Never give up and always have faith.
