Reducing Nail and Cuticle Biting Star this Commitment
Week 5 of 5

ktvaerten commits to:
I will reduce my engagement in nail and cuticle biting by an average of 20 per week, starting at 100 for the first week, over a five week period. Nail and cuticle biting is defined as any nail or cuticle coming into contact with and between the top and bottom teeth. Each instance of this is counted as one occurrence of the behavior. After earning three consecutive stickers, I can earn a bag of popcorn. After each week in which the average frequency of the behavior per day is less than the goal

The goal for this week was met every day. Overall, I am excited about the results that I have seen with this behavior contract. I plan to continue to implement this contract, possibly with a few modifications. If I were to write another behavior contract, I would include more aversive stimuli. I think that the aversive stimuli work better for me than the reinforcers do. Since I had so much success with this behavior contract, I plan to utilize them more in the future. The goal for this week was 40, and my numbers are as follows:
Monday – 5
Tuesday – 1
Wednesday – 19
Thursday – 18
Friday – 11

Once again, I made my goal for the week. Reaching this goal each week has been easier than I thought it would be. I think that writing every instance down has forced me to see how often I really do this. Seeing this has helped me in reducing the behavior. I think that what has motivated me even more than the reinforcement of food that I receive is the reinforcement of how much nicer my nails look. Even though my goal for this week was 60, I had far less than 60 each day. I think that I could have been a little more ambitious with my goal, but I want to be able to maintain a low level of behavior, so I did not want to rush through. I am excited that I have had so much success so far. My numbers are as follow:
Sunday - 8
Monday - 32
Tuesday - 14
Wednesday - 7
Thursday - 1
Friday - 0
Saturday - 14
Sunday - 14

I stayed under my goal every day this week so far. I again found that the busier that I am, the less that I bite. None of my bites this week were to my nails, they were all on my cuticles. Having longer, nicer nails should help me to keep staying away from them. I also found that I have been picking at my cuticles a lot. However, since biting at them is worse, I would rather tackle that problem first. The goal for Sunday was still 100, but the goal for this week was 80. My numbers are as follows:
Sunday - 24
Monday - 50
Tuesday - 56
Wednesday - 56
Thursday - 70
Friday - 40
Saturday - 8

This week I stayed under my goal every day so far. I found that tallying all of my nail and cuticle bites is rather aversive. This is helping me to keep my numbers low. The first three days, I had to stop myself as I was approaching 100. The next three days were not as difficult for me. I think that this may be because I was rather busy with work on Thursday and Friday and I had a friend visit on Saturday. My nail and cuticle biting typically occurs when I'm alone in the car or alone at home. My numbers for the week are as follows:
Monday - 99
Tuesday - 83
Wednesday - 95
Thursday - 0
Friday - 20
Saturday - 56
