How is this commitment going? Fairly well, all things considered. I've gotten some really good outlining done, which needed doing more than I realized. I think I have enough down that I could start come October, but I am recently having a crisis of confidence for no particular reason other than general perfectionism, I guess. It's not like I'm worried the story will suck, you know? Am I worried that it won't be perfect? Spectacular? The best story ever told? Maybe I must be getting hung up on the end point rather than my own journey through the process. That's why I'd kind of wanted to plow through the draft in the span of a month. Just write a shitty first draft. I have the map. I have the notebook, I have the pens, just get it down. But also, I guess I want the journey not to suck? That's a mental thing...

Okay, this one is fairly ambitious, but I like having a deadline in it. That's the thing about these goals that matter to no one but yourself - they can get back burnered so easily, and there are no immediately apparent consequences - just the way you feel about yourself and your life without really knowing why. So immediately upon setting this deadline, I had some fantastic breakthroughs on small but important plot and character points I had been struggling with in the outline process. I structured it as though adapting it for short-season TV, that is, designed to escalate at certain points, regularly raising the stakes, yet providing a solid arc between each turning point so that the pace feels steady and like we're making visible progress in each chapter, not biding our time for the big payout at the end. So. That went well yesterday. I'll have to think a little more about how I'm going to tackle the actual drafting of the piece in a way I'll feel satisfied with.

Fuckin hell! If I go at my own pace, I'll be agonizing over this forever. I've already been outlining for like six months. So I set the goal to have a shitty first draft by the end of October - six weeks, more than enough time if I throw caution to the wind and haul ass through it. I'm aiming for 70-80k final, but lets be real this draft is going to be a shit show and I'd be happy with 30-35k. Forget chapters or whatever if I have to, and we're looking at let's say 6k per week.
