Once again I failed to add a journal entry for my reading. Since I’m a man of my word I have I mark this report as failed. Even though I did actually read every single evening.

So I have actually been reading every day I just haven't been posting about it. The cause of this has been limited wi-fi and just forgetting. Still this means I wasn't sticking to my stated commitment of posting about everything I've read. So it cannot count as successful.

Recently I've been reading 2 books, Charlie Houpbert's Charisma On Command and Olivia Cabane's The Charisma Myth. I've basically been skim-reading them in order to try and get a general idea of what they both cover. It's interesting because they both supply an equation for charisma, both of which are different:
The Charisma Myth: Charisma = Presence + Power + Warmth
Charisma On Command: Charisma = Conviction + Energy + Presentation
Upon reading further, both these equations make sense but I think The Charisma Myth's one is more complete. Olivia Cabane states that all charisma starts with being present, the person interacting with you can detect if you're really focusing on them by reading the thousands of micro expressions visible on the face. If you are not completely focusing on them, they will feel confused, disrespected and resentful. Both books emphasise this snd suggests tips to help you reach a state of presence focusing on mindfulness and visualisations. But Charisma Myth also states the barriers to presence, and gives research backed advice on how to counter it.

When it comes to Power and Warmth, Oliva Cabane delves into the evolutionary theory for this. For our ancestors in the jungle a powerful person could mean either life or death, they could either protect you or kill you. Matched with Warmth, this person is purely one that can protect you. Now you have no reason not to like this person: he/she will ensure your survival. Interestingly, both Charlie and Olivia note Bill Clinton as the epitome of charismatic warmth, with Charlie noting the value of his eye contact.

Overall, I do believe that The Charisma Myth is superior to Charisma On Command, the book is well structured and gives broad explanations and advice about the aspects of charisma. That said, Charisma On Command is more entertaining to read because of Charlie's storytelling skills, what's more Charlie provides some more easy-to-measuer and practical tips to improve your charisma.

Conclusion, first read The Charisma Myth to understand the fundamentals of charisma, next read Charisma On Command to refine yourself.

The Fourth Transformation

Artificial not-so-intelligent, Robot warriors, hackable IOT devices and ransom ware, the list goes on. But the authors repeat that their chief worry is the affect on the human mind that this technology will have: how it will affect our social skills, creativity and empathy. One interesting analogy they point out is how a picture of a naked child was posted on Facebook in September 2016. Facebook’s Smart bots, as they were trained to do, took down the post. However this was not just a picture of a naked child, it was the 1972 Pulitzer Prize winning picture of a girl running away from a Vietnam village following a napalm bombing. Following complaints, Facebook’s human workers apologised and had the post resubmitted. This is an example of where AI is not quite there yet, and prone to making mistakes this human simply wouldn’t make.
