To become more Christlike by way of... Star this Commitment
Week 4 of 4

JeremyBledsoe commits to:
Read one to two chapters of The Screwtape Letters a day, finishing the book by December 6th or earlier. I will create a chapter-by-chapter “Tip Sheet” that summarizes the “tempters'” beliefs about “patients,” and the examples of deception which tempters use to manipulate their patients away from authentic Christianity. There are 31 chapters in the book, I will read one chapter a day on weekdays and two chapters a day on weekends. After reading, I will know the devils methods of deception.

I completed the last chapter in The Screwtape Letters. I have learned that Hell has very little power over humans. The most they can do is confuse our priorities and lead us toward misdirection from our true selves. I was surprised to learn that the patient died so abruptly, but am happy to know that those who lose their way from time to time are still able to right their wrongs and make it to heaven. Our feelings are not as essential to our faith as the actions we pursue because of our feelings. People are attracted to the violence and evil in the world because it is more exciting than the righteous and virtuous side.

This experiment has helped me understand the nature of people and spirituality on a deeper level than I have known before. It delves deep into the blind spots of faith that most don't even consider. These nuances are very important to understanding the troughs and peaks of faith, and the methods that evil utilizes to sway our perceptions of faith.

Ch 25
Tempers try to entice us toward evil in our middle age most of all because it is when we realize that life is somewhat dull and we are not filled with that youthful imagination and hope that we once had. Ourselves are wared down overtime, Attrition. Prosperity during this time is good for the tempers because it makes us believe we are finding our place, when in reality we are becoming used to, and happy to be, succumbing to worldly pleasures and social status. They entice us to believe that we can make our own heaven on earth by living up to our hopes, dreams and expectations. Crucial note: “Where Virtue is concerned ‘experience is the mother of illusion’”

Ch 24
Tempers lead us to become like those we love and to define ourselves and the group that we imitate as “the right Christians”, dubbing outsiders that don’t share our beliefs as stupid. This is a result of naivety and ignorance. We imitate these groups’ defects as well, believing that it is a desirable trait of being righteous and above others, which demonstrates the act of spiritual pride. We become blinded to our groups tendencies and beliefs, and succumb to them without realizing that before we devoted ourselves to them, we would have been puzzled and repelled by them. Our affinity for our ingroups lead to finding boredom in others, believing that we are better than them and more Christian than them. This demonstrates social vanity. Tempers want us to congratulate ourselves for reasons that are unjustifiable regarding our actions without questioning what we congratulate ourselves for. They want to make “Christianity a mystery religion in which” we feel we are one of the initiates.

Ch 20
Tempers manipulate popular fashion to treat and misdirect sexual taste. This is to aim people toward partners who are not spiritually helpful or healthy, toward those who will not provide fertile and fruitful marriages. They lead society to find apparent nudity (not completely nude) in art so that people will want to develop this popular physique that is likely unattainable to attract the opposing sex. Makes people critique and judge with their eyes to determine their mate. Men are attracted to two types of women, the extremely devout woman who is already married and the prostitute who demonstrates animalistic traits. The infernal Venus can tempt men to want to marry them to justify their faith, but their relationship will end in sorrow.

I am glad to find that I have already realized/noticed a few works of the tempers in regards to unwarranted love based on lust and the role of popular fashion/trends in attempting to entice people to lust rather than love. I have realized many of my own negative tendencies in regarding prayer, particularly the act of summing up answered prayers as coincidence. I will post a few chapter insights below.

Reading every night has really opened my eyes to the subtle thoughts, actions, and feelings I have that separate me from God. I see the ways that the devils influence me to betray my intended values by way of action and thought. I will be reading chapter 20 tomorrow. I will post various chapter summaries in my commitment journal now to demonstrate what I've been learning about
