| Alexander decided that before he pursued Darius, he would visit the important towns on the western coast of Asia Minor. At Gordium, Macedonian reinforcements joined him in 333 BC, and he continued on his journey, eventually passing through the narrow plain of Issus — however, when he learned of Darius' whereabouts, he returned to the narrow plain, and the two armies met in combat. Darius' army contained 500-600,000 men, with 30,000 Greek mercenaries. Darius had intended to fight Alexander in the wide plain of Sochi. The narrowness of the plain spelled doom for his mililtary forces, and Alexander was again victorious. | |
