Alexander the Great of Macedon took control of the Greek city-states and proceeded to conquer much of the known world — from Macedon to Greece, as far south as Egypt, then east to Persia and as far as India. Alexander was tutored by Aristotle, and Alexander "hellenized" — or introduced Greek culture and thought to — those parts of the world that he conquered.

Alexander's empire was split up among his four generals after his death, but Greek ideas continued to spread throughout these lands. Greek literature made its way into what had been the Persian Empire and was reflected in the philosophy and literature of the region; Greek literature also spread to Palestine and influenced Jewish philosophy and scripture. Ptolemy I, one of the four generals to succeed Alexander, was likely responsible for creating the Great Library in Alexandria, Egypt — this location became the most prestigious source of knowledge in the ancient world. Greek theatre was popular all throughout the territory of Alexander's former empire. Coinage also reflected Greek tradition, with more realistic portraiture and images acknowledging events or gods. Even after Greek lost its independence to Rome, Hellenization of the world continued through trade and through Roman conquest, and it has left its mark on nearly every modern culture.
