Week 8 of 8

TracyP commits to:
Each week reflect on my One Big Thing. When faced with a situation that requires me to speak up, intervene or direct an employee. Did I do it or did I avoid it?

Okay. So this was a big week and I high fived myself twice. I have my 6 people who are holding me accountable to thank and now this stick group. Last week we had a relief pharmacist who showed up in flip flops to work with a long skirt. I immediately noticed. But was so thankful we had a relief pharmacist I didn’t want to start off our relationship nitpicking and offending the person who has agreed to help. So I said nothing. Val, my assistant said to me. aren’t you going to say something? We can’t wear those. Should she follow the Rubicon dress code if she works for Rubicon? I said I would deal with it. I didn’t. The next day she wore them again. Val said to me. You one big thing is if it happens twice....you need to deal with in the next 48 hours. When Val left at 5 and said to me you have an hour left. I didn’t deal with it. Then Wednesday and Thursday she wore better shoes. So then I figured, who cares - it’s been a good week. Friday morning the relief Pharm came in flip flops again. Before work even started and Val got there to hold me accountable, I asked her to change them. I cited the dress code and that it wasn’t fair to others. She changed them and we rocked out the Friday. I have also stood up for myself and scheduled the Stony Rapids hospital visits for the next two months to help fit my schedule and the store. So I will not miss my sons 16th birthday. I had accepted I would just miss it. Because really you can celebrate any day. But I told myself your family always come in second to work and then I also told myself it’s okay because we will have a big party with his friends another day. Anyways, we were driving back to baseball last week and he said you are missing my birthday again? You missed it last year too. It’s like he was holding me accountable and he doesn’t even know. So I called the other store involved talked to the manager and we came up with a schedule for Stony Rapids that suits everyone. A good week.

Hi all. to answer Hugh. A few of us had given direction to help the gal try to get on the right track. Unfortunately, I honestly think it above her ability. This is an employee that for many years was paid well to stock vials and bags, clean the counters and pull expiries. She really likes to dust...every other day. Now I am training the assistants to answer phones, fill refills and help manage inventory. But I think this in not something she will be able to do.

Hi Tracy, that is fantastic that you "took the bull by the horns" and made your move. I am curious if there was any coaching of her during the 6 week period to help her be able to perform better. The reason I ask is that, as I am sure you have realized some of your challenges are similar to mine and I know there have been times when I let the thing "fester" until I am at my wits end and then I speak to the co-worker. I sometimes find looking back that if I had of acted sooner, perhaps the outcome for both of us would have been better. As I write this I am being made aware of a staff situation that has arisen. My first thought was to ignore it as it is petty and it will rectify itself, however I am going to stop typing now and go and deal with it right @#$%* now !

Quite a few "Tests" since we last saw each other of my "One Big Thing". I feel this leadership group as forced me to address issues as they arise as I know I have the group to be accountable to. I now recognize in the moment that I am avoiding confrontation or "not dealing with something". After about 6 weeks of watching an employee come in early to do inventory, I finally told her last week it isn't working. I cited the many reasons why and told her her shift would start at 9 instead of 8. Our inventory has never been worse and she has not been able to "catch on" to how it needs to be done.
