Mondays are Argue like a Scientist day. I will use the county's Formative Assessment Probes to spark in-depth conversations among students. Students must evidence supported answers. Argumentation is now seen as a core practice for helping students engage with the construction and critique of scientific ideas and for making students scientifically literate. (https://doi.org/10.1525/abt.2014.76.4.3) Questions to ask: Why do you think that? What evidence helped you arrive at that answer? What evidence supports your statement? Does anyone have a different conclusion and why? Comparing arguments: Evaluate the strength of two opposing arguments. Note: students may need to know why scientific argumentation is important. Scientific argumentation is important because a new idea must be shared, evaluated, and refined by the scientific community before it can become a part of the body of knowledge that scientists use to help explain how the work works.
