Graduation Mindset:
After completing the self-assessment for this section, it had me comparing the Title 1 school I taught at, to the school I currently teach at. Thinking about graduation rates, they are lower at lower income schools. The graduation rates are lower there for many reasons but the graduation rate for the high school my students attend is higher. I still think there is room for improvement for the school and district, when it comes to graduation rates. Some factors that could cause a student to not graduate could be needing to work and getting into the work force, they may not see the benefits in graduating, they don’t see a way to go to college so they think they don’t need to graduate. Ways we can help our students to want to graduate could be to encourage them to go to college. Explain to them the benefits of college and how it could further their life. Graduation on a resume could help them find better jobs after school, as well. Arts education and physical activity can play a role in whether or not a student graduates or even wants to come to school. These outlets let students express themselves and have something to strive in. Being in the arts or being a sports team could also lead to a path to higher education. When a student is in high school, they should think about the career they want to go after. Some people want to be a hair dresser, which doesn’t require higher education and some people want to be doctors, which does require higher education. Thinking about these two things should play a role in whether or not a student should ready or college or not.
Reflecting on the daily questions, it has me thinking about making sure I communicate to my students the importance in graduating. My students should know I am pushing them to graduate, the importance in that and how it can further their life. We could discuss in class how God could use their graduation as a way to move their forward and open doors for them. Thinking about music or physical activity, I love sports. I always talk sports with my students and if they are an athlete, I challenge them to be their best and ask them if they want to play sports in college. I push them to dream for something big like that. The strategies I could take to empower my students to be ready for college or a career is to think about what God may have them do with their life and which route would be best to take to achieve that.
A strategy I would like to include in my classroom is to prepare for college and careers. I remind my students daily that God can give them a calling on their life at any time and be ready for the next steps when that happens. I want my students to be thinking about their futures at an early age and whether or not college is right for them. We could discuss different jobs they could enter into and have them think about which one could God be calling them to. Also, I think it’s important to link behaviors with outcomes. Their behaviors now and what they are doing now will have an outcome in their life later on. Linking the content is important as well. One thing that is great about this with teaching the Bible is explaining how God has a plan for their life and helping them navigate if they feel like God is calling them to go to college or not or straight into the work force.

Engagement Mindset
After completing the self-assessment for this section, it gave some insights. Engagement can be a topic that all teachers can struggle with, making sure your students are fully engaged with the content or wondering how we can engage them more. In my classroom, I carry most of the responsibility to make sure my students stay engaged but also some of that responsibility should fall on them. With teaching high school, they are at the age where they take control of their learning and they understand why they should stay engaged. With keeping my students engaged, we do a lot of class discussions, activities, videos and group work. I think with changing it up with different activities, will keep them engaged while also getting them into the word. When thinking back on my time at the Tile 1 school, keeping my student engaged could be hard. Especially if there was something at home that was bothering them. A way I can tell if a student is experiencing high stress or isn’t engaged is when they get quiet. They don’t want to interact with the class. Students make the choice to learn every day and make the choice to stay engaged. I encourage my students to be engaged by getting them to understand how our class will grow their relationships with God.
Stress can be a factor that can cause students to not be engaged in class. Right now, we are doing a study about anxiety and stress and how to deal with that. An awesome thing about my job is I can point them to a spiritual route to deal with stress. We pray together and I give them scripture to deal with what they are going through. We are doing the study on anxiety and stress because exams and EOCs are coming up. Hopefully, they are choosing to learn what we are going over because it can help relieve some of that stress. Classroom community is very important to me. I try to be as open as I can so my students feel they can be open as well.
A strategy I would like to use in my classroom is the strategy of a deeper buy-in. I think this strategy would be great especially for how unique my class is. The strategy discusses how students should learn how to step-up, buy-in to their learning and how it relevant. Students should step-up to the plate of their learning. Take control of it and ownership of it. the buy-in is the hook for the lesson and getting students to understand why we are learning this. Then, relevance, students need to understand why it’s relevant to their lives.

Positivity Mindset
Thinking about the self-assessment for this section, it again had me thinking about my time teaching at a Title 1 school. I often felt helpless in situations. Sometimes, we see our students going through something and we think we can’t help or there’s nothing we can do to help, this can lead us to feel helpless. I felt more helpless about having a positive impact on my students’ lives while working there, now teaching a Bible class, I feel more helpful to positively impact my students live. Some students may find it hard to feel positive about their lives, they may only see their current situation and not beyond that. An insight from this is that teachers or educators can be that form of positivity and encouragement those students need in their lives, for them to push beyond their current situations. As educators, we can encourage our students in the small things, I found great results with positive enforcement. These students may not get an encouragement at home and teachers can be that positive light in their lives. Activities that foster positive attitudes about life is look at verses that discuss this and talk about how to apply it to their lives. Right now, we are discussing anxiety and we are studying verses that discuss that to positively impact their lives. If students are having a hard time to find the positive in situations, I can be someone they can talk to about the issues. Then pray for them and find verses to help them.
Something that is great about my job is I can pray for my students and give them verses or Bible stories to help them in their times of trouble. Before I set a foot in my classroom, I pray the Lord gives me the knowledge to know how to handle their issues and help me find a path for them to handle them. I have had students in the past who haven’t wanted to learn or doesn’t feel a sense of optimism. This is where I love talking about my past experiences. My job gives me a great opportunity to open about my testimony and how students can learn from it. If a student is struggling with optimism, I can talk about when I dealt with the same thing and how I got through it. In my past classrooms, to build and foster positive attitudes, I focused a lot on positive enforcement. I would praise them for the smallest things and it would brighten up their day and make them want to learn more. Now, in my classroom, I can help my students look at the positive things in life and see what the Bible says about it.
The strategy I would like to implement in my classroom is to boost optimism and hope. I feel like some students don’t have enough or hope or optimism in their lives. They only see their current situation and can’t see past it. Allowing for my students to have activities in class that can foster optimism and hope in their lives would be very helpful. As educators, we can model optimism daily, build hope, build up students’ self-esteem and effort levels and encourage and support their dreams. It’s important for teachers to remember we may be the only source of encouragement in our students lives.

Achievement Mindset:
After completing the self-assessment for this section, it had me reflecting on my time teaching elementary. When thinking about teaching students and having the thought that some “isn’t good” at a certain piece of content, I thought about teaching math and how that was a normal subject for students to struggle with. It was confirmed that it can be easy to have those thoughts but also that you can work through those thoughts and help your student succeed. For goals, it gave some insights. I usually set daily goals for my students currently. These goals could be certain topics to cover or verses but I realized that needs to grow. I need to set higher goals for my students that go beyond that. The goals need to be more ambitious, on the lines of understanding the scripture themselves. Giving students feedback was easier when I taught elementary than it has been teaching high school Bible class. In my class now, it is more reviewing the scripture together and see what they can gain and then giving them pointers to lead them in the right direction. Thinking about how poverty affects students’ belief in their abilities, I don’t see this in my current students but I did see it in my past student. When I taught at a Title 1 school, this was prevalent. Students couldn’t see past their current situation and I wanted to dream bigger and set high goals for themselves.
When looking at the daily questions, it got me thinking about how I can push my students to be their best and overcome obstacles. Currently, I encourage them by talking about my own struggles. If I open up to them, they are most likely to open up and have a discussion about what they are going through. The overall goal for my students to get them into the Bible as much as possible, help them better understand it and strengthen their relationship with God. We do this by daily goals that leads to higher goals.
When implementing a new strategy for my students, I love the idea of micro goals. We have talked about setting high goals and standards for yourself but what can happen and how we can feel if we don’t reach those goals. Having daily goals or micro goals can raise your confidence in yourself you can reach those higher goals. Using those micro goals gives a measureable progress toward a bigger goal, it shows you are making growth. It also provides quick emotional affirmation and gives students a moment of celebration. It encourages them that they achieve those higher goals.
