For my last post I thought it would be fitting to chose the graduation mindset. When I think about my school, I know that most of the teacher have a graduation mindset for all of our students. I work in an elementary school so our school doesn't have a program in place to help students after graduation life, but students know that once the get into 5th grade they get to participate in a graduation ceremony and for them that is. something a lot of them work hard to get to. We do have a mentoring program that enable volunteers to come into the school and they have lunch with students that we notice need that extra person to talk to based off home life. During this time students are able to talk to these volunteers about whats on their mind. Most of these mentors follow them throughout their school careers and I have heard of time were they have stayed connected with them outside of their school career to continue helping them deviate from what their home life looked like.
Related are and physical education are a pretty important part of our day. Physical education is our only related arts that students can't miss for any education need.(i.e make up testing, resource, etc) Our school doesn't allow that because with state requirements we don't have any extra time in our schedule for them to make up that time. We are a global studies certified school. Meaning we are a school that instead of having 2 days of physical education one of our days is filled with global studies where students learn about cultures around the world. When it comes to instructional time in my room I don't put as much emphasis on related arts and physical education as I think I could. This is because our schedule is so tight in what all we have to accomplish in a day that sometimes we can barely fit in what we need to. I think a way I could solve this problem would be through integration in my other area of teaching.

This week I am focusing on engagement. Engagement is important for me with my students. I want them actively want to be involved in each lesson that I have created for them. I want them to enjoy learning throughout the lessons I have created for them. Student buy in for me in huge, if students are wanting to learn in my classroom then I am failing them in some way. I have found that student buy in works best in my room when I do one of the following things: introduce the lesson in a fun way(i.e video), give them choice board on how to show their learning, work with partners to complete a task. When students are able to choose from a list of activities what to do then they begin feeling like their opinion matters. Once students feel like they matter than they begin to trust you and want to learn along side you. When a lesson is introduced in a fun way it engages students to want to know more. My students in past have loved learning about something and then watching a short video on it. This engages all types of learners to ensure everyone understands the material. I am still working on my questioning for engaging students. I actually made that one of my goals when I was being evaluated to improve on that. I think that I have gotten better with the feedback I have gotten, but it is always something that I want to continue working on because students look for the times when they can show off what they know.

This week I am choosing positivity. When I think about teaching I know that it is something I wanted to do and something I love to do. When I wake up each morning I feel ready to start the day because this is the career I chose and I know I am making a difference on these kids. There are times towards the end of the day that I can't wait to get home but it's a rare thing and it's usually because its just been a hard day for various reasons. I feel ready for the day because I chose to be a teacher, when I chose this career I knew that I needed to be impactful on these students. I knew I needed to be a good role model for them and pour into their education. Knowing that I am making a difference in their lives is what makes me want to keep going. Because of this attitude I have rarely had students come through my class and feel like they couldn't be successful. I can think of only one student at the moment and that feeling started in another school various grades before and nothing could change his outlook on teachers and other students.
I know that if I walked into school everyday with a negative attitude every morning my kids would start to get that outlook on school, as well. Your students are watching you and they are watching what you are doing. When they see that you feel like your job is hopeless or you are giving up on them then they start losing hope in themselves and in school. I like to help students with this sense of hopelessness by giving them second chances. For example, if a student makes a bad grade and I ask them to rework something or try it again. Sometimes they come to me and say they can't do it or they aren't smart enough. When I hear these words I like to take a step back and sit down with them and help them re-work those problems. By doing this they are usually able to tell me each and every step without having to even ask. Once they see they can do this again then they start rebuilding that foundation of hope they didn't think they had. It's a great thing to watch come to life.
