The Engagement Mindset: I really needed to read this mindset this week. Teaching in a Title 1 school is exhausting because I feel as if I have to pour so much energy into my teaching and kids. They come to school still half asleep, or they come in a state of distress due to something that has happened the night before or that morning. After reading about this mindset I feel more armed and prepared to address these issues with my students. As look ahead to this school year, I'm planning to use many of the strategies mentioned in the books. I love all of the activities suggested in chapter 16, Engage for Maintenance and Stress. Some of these I can use as what I call "brain breaks" throughout the day. I also plan to use some of the strategies listed in chapter 17 to build a deeper buy-in from my students. For example, I plan to use ideas from the Relevance and Hooks sections and I want to buy the book Teach Like a Pirate (Burgess, 2012). Lastly, I plan to incorporate classroom rituals such as "callbacks," "end-of-class celebrations," and "attention-getters." I feel that by implementing these strategies this coming school year I can improve not only my engagement mindset to have more energy to teach my students, but also build up their engagement mindset too. |

The Rich Classroom Climate Mindset: This week I chose to read about the Rich Classroom Climate Mindset. I didn't even realize this was a mindset until I began reading. I always thought a safe classroom climate was like a safe classroom environment. However, I've learned over the readings that you can have a safe classroom environment all day long but not a rich classroom climate mindset. Having this mindset means creating positive, responsive environments where showing your students who they are, what they are passionate about, and how they feel about things is top priority. In order to do this, students need their teacher to help them find and use their voice and vision, create safe norms, and foster positive attitudes when it comes to academics. One strategy I have been doing towards having a rich classroom climate mindset is beginning the year by having my students create our class norms through collaborative discussions. Another strategy I have been implementing is that of classroom jobs. However, I really like the way Jensen's book empowers students with class jobs that have names representing job titles that pay money in the real world. I will be changing my job titles to reflect the same for next year. I would also like to increase my students' voices and visions this year and plan to use some of the suggestions in Jensen's books. I really like the goal sheet and think it will help my students develop their own vision and plan to use it next year as well. In addition, I love the idea of role change and plan to ask my students to define their future by completing the reproducible worksheet. This would pair nicely with our first reading unit of study as we discuss character traits in The Tiger Rising as well as within ourselves, helping us to see who we are, who we want to become, and what we need to do to get there. I think this will also benefit how my students view themselves and their ability to succeed over time. They will be able to connect more to a character in The Tiger Rising and then realize how they overcame the struggles in their lives. By doing this they should see that they can do the same and be successful. |

The Positivity Mindset: This week's readings for this journal entry really hit home and I'm so grateful to have been able to read about the Positivity Mindset. Part of me feels like I have this mindset, yet I'm very quick to respond in moody ways or negative self-talk. In fact, I've often joked with my husband about the real reason I married him, because he balances me out with his consistent positivity. All jokes aside, there is a lot of truth in that statement. I admire how he approaches each day as new and deals with whatever comes his way without distress and with optimism. Over the years I have tried building my mindset towards pure optimism and positivity, and in many ways I have grown. I try to slow down and think before reacting and identify when I begin to talk negatively. Then, I reframe my negative thought with a positive one. Even though I have made strides, my goal is to continue to make many more and be able to incorporate the positivity mindset throughout my whole life; home and work. I love that the books have links to online reproducible posters. My plan is to download many of these to hang in my classroom. I love the affirmations, gratitude, and stay positive posters to name a few. I think just having them in my room for me to look at would be very helpful in transforming my mindset! In addition, I'm also wondering how I can implement some of the great strategies at the beginning of this coming school year. A lot of them will mesh nicely with my school's SEL program. I'm also realizing that this new knowledge on positivity can help me rearrange lesson plans for our first reading and writing units, which focus on characters, traits, theme, life issues, and writing narratives. I think this would allow more time at the beginning of the year to really focus on growing my students' positivity mindset, in addition to my own, and to teach strategies for all to use. I'm thinking this would also create a deeper understanding of character traits and traits within ourselves, therefore making our discussions about the book, The Tiger Rising, more meaningful. We could discuss ways in which characters of the book used or did not use acts of kindness and gratitude. I could then implement the "classroom directory" strategy so my students know who to go to for help in certain situations. I might even be able to include a service project throughout these units as I plan to contact a few of the suggestions from the service work list in the handbook. Wow! I'm just realizing how much content and social-emotional learning and growth can take place by incorporating all of this! I'm very excited to get this going and will be talking with the other members of my 4th grade team about this plan as well. |
