Chapter 1

Ocean

I get up, get in the bathroom, get out of the bathroom, and go downstairs. I don’t bother to change. This is actually my favorite T-shirt. Oversized, at least twenty years old, my dad’s, gray, with surf – is there anything bad about it?!
My room is on the second floor. Mom is afraid someday it will be blown away and I with it. I don’t see the bad thing about that.
Next to it is the attic. It’s the largest room in the house, and it’s filled with Grandpa’s things. Tho at this point it's not Grandpa’s things but just vintage things.
There are some of Grandma’s old dresses and shirts, some of Mom’s clothes, some of Dad’s surfs, many paintings, tables, wardrobes, driftwood, collections… anything. And it’s been in my Brain-To-Do-List for an eternity, but I never do it for some reason. It is just there, the word “attic”, and I don’t even know what I should do with it.
As far as people say, I’m as sentimental as Grandpa, so probably nothing’s gonna change.
Downstairs smells like pancakes, love, and honey, and I can’t wait to see my family. Grandpa is reading the newspaper at the table(he is one of those people that don’t forget old habits easily), Dad is painting his new surf, and Grandma is cooking. Apparently, Mom still sleeps. It is 7 am, so I am not surprised.
The sun is pouring out of the old but clean window and I feel the immerse need to sit and describe it. Instead, I say "good morning" and look at Grandpa’s newspaper.
He is looking at an article about moving. It says that change is good. I smile slightly. Everybody knows change is good.
Dad’s new surf is with a painting of mom. Her curly long light hair is a tangled mess above her animated face, her big brown eyes are loving and her smile is shining. She is wearing a blue bikini and the background is covered in sunny ocean doodles.
“Hi, Skye. How did you sleep?”
Dad has been crazy in love with Mom ever since I remember, and, I believe, even earlier. A smile appears on his face every time she enters the room, she is on most of his paintings. Dad loves Mom more than the ocean, more than surfing, more than himself.
Mom loves Dad too. Her love is the silent type. She takes care of him, she treats his sunburns and she tells him to clothe warmer. She smiles more around him but doesn’t let him see it.
They are both like a teenage couple. When you see them, you can’t believe they have been married for more than 17 years. It’s the kind of love that inspires you to be positive. It shines and glitters, and it never stops. If you are in the same room with them, you can’t miss it – it’s surrounding them, leaving a blossom scent and soaking into you. A second in that room would be a blessing for your soul.
